My discourse community map basically consists of how I communicate with people in the workplace and how I act differently, like in school, with friends, at church and at the workplace. The purpose for writing this map is for people that don’t know me well, an know me more. This discourse community map is written about church, friends, family, and work. The guidelines to the discourse community are that there are genres, goals, language spoken and values we use different language with the family than in school.

For family there are goals and the goals are to have honesty, communication and to always be there for one and another. Some of our values will be to talk if something is going wrong and we always try to stay together. Our language is formal and informal, but mostly informal. We speak about anything and Spanish is all we speak with grand mom, dad, mom, uncles and aunts. English may be used with my cousins. Our genres will be that we have family reunions and we use the photo albums and remember good stuff we have gone through, our family is full of nostalgia. We use the telephone to communicate with far relatives and if we are in far distance too.

In the work place, I work at whataburguer is a fast food restaurant. To join at whataburguer you need to walk in the restaurant and fill out an application, and the manager may aside you with an interview if you meet the standards you get hired. The vocabulary in my work place is very formal, we would use the words “welcome to whataburguer”, and greet the customer in a friendly manner. We use words like “whatasize” and “whatameal” and “whatachiken” a lot. Our main language there is English even though the majority speaks Spanish to communicate. Our goal in the work place is to make the customer feel satisfied with their food and make them feel comfortable like a valuable customer and to make them feel relaxed with our classical music. For our genres, well we use the phone at all times, we take orders by phone and we write down phone orders. We use flyers to promote our specials of the month. We also need to look professional at all times and friendly with the customers, can’t complain in front of the customers.

At church our goal is to have people know about Jesus Christ, and to have people come to church and try to get them closer to god. The language at church is Spanish and English, we use words related to god, like “bible” and “amen”. We use formal language at all times. We sing to god all the time and we read the bible the whole service. We communicate with the sermon a lot and we have classes where we write down things we learned. Our conventions are to feel good and relaxed and calm knowing god is in our heart and also to have time for him and know that god is with us anywhere.

With my friends the language is informal and formal, we use slang words a lot. We speak Spanish all the time, we don’t like English. We refer to us as best friends and we use the word “best” and “love” all the time. My goals with them is to talk to them whenever I want and they give advice and there always there for you and care for you. We communicate by phone, by Facebook updates and Facebook emails, we text message each other all the time and we use sometimes write letters to each other. We must always be there for each other and trust each other and we should give advice to one another if we needed and always have a good time together.

I share different things with people in the workplace, with friends, and at school. Is good to have activities in your daily life and share it with people. There are special rules, different language and goals to each community. This discourse community map shows how I communicate in work differently than with my friends or in church. To become a member of a discourse community you need to apply rules and goals to different communities.
